GAME MANUAL & RULES

How to Play Krillion

Seven prompts. 25 seconds per round. Rare answers sink you deeper. Obvious answers barely count.

The Core Premise

Krillion is an ocean-themed reverse-popularity trivia game. Unlike traditional trivia that asks you to find the only correct answer, Krillion gives you open-ended categories (e.g., "Name a chemical element" or "Name a university in the UK") with hundreds of valid possibilities.

Your objective is not just to be correct, but to be obscure. Common answers only give you a shallow splash, while rare, deep-cut knowledge plunges your submersible down toward the 7,000-meter Hadal Trench floor.

The 3 Simple Rules

01

7 Prompts a Day

Every day, a unified set of seven prompts is published globally. Everyone plays the exact same questions under identical conditions.

02

25 Seconds Each

You have exactly 25 seconds to recall and type your answer. You can guess multiple times if an answer isn't recognized.

03

1 pt = 10 Metres

Each question awards up to 100 points. 700 points total sinks you 7,000 meters to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

Rarity Tiers & Depth Scoring

Every accepted answer is sorted into one of five depth bands:

  • ๐Ÿฆ Obvious (Too Clever) โ€” 10 Points (+100m): Common household names (e.g. Apple, Harvard, Taylor Swift). Everyone typed it; minimal descent.
  • ๐ŸŸ Schooler โ€” 30 Points (+300m): Solid respectable answers (e.g. Kumquat, Cornell, Lorde). Swimming with the school.
  • ๐Ÿฆ‘ Rare โ€” 60 Points (+600m): Genuinely uncommon answers below the light zone (e.g. Bilberry, Warwick, Kate Bush).
  • ๐Ÿฎ Deep Cut โ€” 85 Points (+850m): Obscure specialists. Only deep trivia nerds pull these from memory.
  • ๐ŸŒŸ One in a Krillion โ€” 100 Points (+1,000m): The single designated gem answer. Instant maximum sink!

The 20-Second Strategic Decision Model

Because the clock ticks down from 25 seconds, top players use a split-brain approach:

  1. Seconds 25 to 15 (Aim for the Stars): Discard your first immediate thought. Search your memory for obscure regional, historical, or scientific examples.
  2. Seconds 15 to 7 (Refine & Type): Enter your candidate word. If rejected, you still have time for a secondary guess.
  3. Seconds 6 to 1 (Fallback Mode): If you are blanking, type any obvious answer immediately. Scoring 10 points is infinitely better than taking a 0-point miss (โฌ›).

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is each round in Krillion?

Each question has a strict 25-second countdown timer. If you do not submit a recognized answer before the timer hits 0, you receive a miss (0 points, โฌ›).

Can I guess multiple times per question?

Yes! If you type an answer that is not recognized or not on the reef, you can quickly delete it and try another word as long as time remains on the 25-second clock.

What is a 'One in a Krillion' answer?

A 'One in a Krillion' answer is the most obscure, rare designated answer for that prompt. It awards the maximum 100 points and plunges your submersible 1,000 meters down.

When does the Daily Dive update?

The daily 7-question puzzle resets at midnight Eastern Time (04:00 UTC / 12:00 PM Beijing Time). Everyone around the world plays the exact same 7 prompts each day.
